They’re Not Even Pretending Anymore
The New York Times isn’t even pretending to be balanced anymore. Today their editorial board is singing the praises of a Supreme Court gone liberal (except where it effects them) and prints an op-ed penned by John Flip-flop Kerry, but doesn’t allow for a rebuttal from the administration. In fact when was the last time the Times printed anything penned by someone on the right like Ann Coulter, Karl Rove, Sean Hannity, David and Rush Limbaugh, or Hugh Hewitt?
As far as Kerry’s op-ed? It’s all sour grapes. In it I hear an angry man, a child gone off the deep end because he was picked last to play dodge-ball.
Our mission in Iraq is harder because the administration ignored the advice of others, went in largely alone, underestimated the likelihood and power of the insurgency, sent in too few troops to secure the country, destroyed the Iraqi army through de-Baathification, failed to secure ammunition dumps, refused to recognize the urgency of training Iraqi security forces and did no postwar planning. A little humility would go a long way - coupled with a strategy to succeed.
“Ignored the advice of others….” translated you didn’t do what I and the rest of the fringe left told you to do. “Went in largely alone….” translated you went in without France, Germany, and Russia — the same ones that were profiting from unscam. “A little humility would go a long way….” Gee, your right John, a little humility would go a long way. Why don’t you stop and take your own advice for once. Take a couple of deep breaths and recognize some of the good things that are going on in Iraq like free and fair elections, or the fact that they are well on their way to holding a constitutional convention. If you find yourself wanting to know a few more, you don’t have to go far. There are plenty of mil-bloggers out there that are either in-country or have been in-country that can give you more examples.
The president must also announce immediately that the United States will not have a permanent military presence in Iraq. Erasing suspicions that the occupation is indefinite is critical to eroding support for the insurgency.
Who among us really believe that our presence is permanent. I mean the President has already said many times that we will come home when the Iraqi’s are able to defend themselves. Of course, let’s be honest, you just want what you’ve asked for time and time again, and that’s a timetable for withdrawl. Your. not. going. to. get. one. In fact, it’s the possibility that our presence will indefinite that will allow us to continue to make progress in Iraq. If we announce a timetable the insurgency will know they only have to hold on that long before they can retake the country and turn it into the Islamic hell on earth that was Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
Iraq, of course, badly needs a unified national army, but until it has one - something that our generals now say could take two more years - it should make use of its tribal, religious and ethnic militias like the Kurdish pesh merga and the Shiite Badr Brigade to provide protection and help with reconstruction. Instead of single-mindedly focusing on training a national army, the administration should prod the Iraqi government to fill the current security gap by integrating these militias into a National Guard-type force that can provide security in their own areas.
This doesn’t sound like a very good idea to me. If you use these different ethnic militias you will have competing interests and it would likely through the country into more chaos. Keeping this in mind, it seems that a national army is the best way to go.
The administration must work with the Iraqi government to establish a multinational force to help protect its borders. Such a force, if sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council, could attract participation by Iraq’s neighbors and countries like India.
If sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council blah… blah… blah… blah. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; why do we care what the UN says and how are we going to get countries who weren’t interested in the initial invasion to participate in border security?
But we need to give these nations a strategic plan for regional security, acknowledging their fears of an Iran-dominated crescent and their concerns about our fitful mediation between Israel and the Palestinians in return for their help in rebuilding Iraq, protecting its borders, and bringing its Sunnis into the political process. [Emphasis mine — TR]
What the left really wants is for America to support the Palestinians and by doing so turn it’s back on Israel. For proof of this assertion just look at the major suck up job Bill Clinton did on Yasser Arafat.
The next months are critical to Iraq’s future and our security. If Mr. Bush fails to take these steps, we will stumble along, our troops at greater risk, casualties rising, costs rising, the patience of the American people wearing thin, and the specter of quagmire staring us in the face. Our troops deserve better: they deserve leadership equal to their sacrifice.
Mr. Bush? What about a little respect there Mr. Kerry. His title is President Bush. Then again, why should we expect a leftist paper or wanna be President to respect the greatest war time leadership we’ve had since FDR?

A more evenhanded report of what is going on at GITMO has surfaced now. In it, we find that the true victims of abuse there are our service men and women. Many of these men and women are with the New Jersey National Guard and live just minutes away from the twin towers. Many of them lost friends and family on 9-11. Do they abuse the detainees? Not accrding to the many reports I’ve heard — includinng a personal visit by a Fox News camera crew.
Now we have this report from Lt. Col. Gordon Cucullu via Frontpagemag.com .
After speaking with soldiers, sailors, and civilians who collectively staff Gitmo, I left convinced that abuse definitely exists at the detention facilities, and it typically fails to receive the press attention it deserves: it’s the relentless, merciless attacks on American servicemen and women by these terrorist thugs. Many of the orange jumpsuit-clad detainees fight their captors at every opportunity, openly bragging of their desire to kill Americans. One has promised that, if released, he would find MPs in their homes through the internet, break into their houses at night, and “cut the throats of them and their families like sheep.†Others claim authority and vindication to kill women, children, and other innocents who oppose their jihadist mission authorized by the Koran (the same one that hangs in every cell from a specially-designed holder intended to protect it from a touching the cell floor – all provided at U.S. taxpayer expense). One detainee was heard to tell another: “One day I will enjoy sucking American blood, although their blood is bitter, undrinkable….†These recalcitrant detainees are known euphemistically as being “non-compliant.†They attack guards whenever the soldiers enter their cells, trying to reach up under protective facemasks to gouge eyes and tear mouths. They make weapons and try to stab the guards or grab and break limbs as the guards pass them food.
[…] […] […] […] The detainees are similarly catered to medically. Almost every one arrived at GITMO with some sort of battlefield trauma. After all, the majority were captured in combat. Today they are healthy, immunized, and well cared for. At a visit to the modern hospital facility – dedicated solely to the detainees and comparable to a well-equipped and staffed small-town hospital with operating, dental, routine facilities – the doctor in charge confirmed that the caloric count for the detainees was so high that while “most detainees arrived undernourished,†medics now watch for issues stemming from high cholesterol and being overweight. Each of approximately 520 terrorists currently held in confinement averages about four medical visits monthly, something one would expect from only a dedicated American hypochondriac. Welcome to the rigors of detention under American supervision.
Of the estimated 70,000 battlefield captures that were made in Afghanistan, only a tiny percentage, something on the order of 800-plus, were eventually evacuated to GITMO. These were the worst of the worst. More than 200 have been released back to their home country – if the U.S. is assured that the detainees would not be tortured by local authorities upon return. These men were freed because they were deemed by ongoing official military review processes to no longer pose a threat, or to possess no useful intelligence. And this process has proven too generous at times: more than 10 released GITMO detainees have been killed or recaptured fighting Americans or have been identified as resuming terrorist activities. Still, the process is up and running for review of cases, and if a Washington DC circuit court approves a government appeal, the system for military tribunals will get started. All mechanisms are in place and ready to go as soon as DoD gets a green light.
There is a good reason these unlawful combatants are being confined. They are evil and dangerous individuals. Yet these thugs are treated with an amazing degree of compassion: They are given ice cream treats and recreational time. They live in clean facilities, and receive a full Muslim religious package of Koran, prayer rug, beads, and prayer oils. An arrow in every cell points to Mecca. The call to prayer is played five times daily. They are not abused, hanged, tortured, beheaded, raped, mutilated, or in any way treated the way that they once treated their own captives – or now treat their guards.
Shame on you Senator Durbin for slandering the good name of the US Military for short term political gain. To the rest of the spineless pansies in the Senate who refuse to censure this jerk for his remarks — we will remember this in ‘06 and ‘08.
Hugh’s analysis of the left in regards to the recent Dean/Durbin/Pelosi/Kennedy/MoveOn melt down over the war is spot on this morning. Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything less from the commish. Here’s a sample:
The political consequences of the Democrats’ decision to press for a cut-and-run strategy in the face of virulent jihadism is I think certain disaster next November. There will be an attempt as the election draws near and progress continues in Iraq to pretend that this early summer outbreak of defeatism was misunderstood, that Pelosi, Kennedy, Durbin, Rangel and Feinstein (”It’s his war”) were all somehow misquoted. They haven’t been, of course. The public glimpsed the real intent of the Democratic Party if given the controls of the nation’s defenses: Retreat and hope for the best.

Yes, after a long and painful fight, I’m back in the saddle. I cannot begin to thank all of you who have left your comments and well wishes. Posting will be light over the next few days up to a week, as I am still very weak and get tired easy.

This will probably be my last post on these pages. Good grief. Has there really been that many updates? As many of you know, Jim was sent to a Denver area nursing home for physical rehab a number of days ago. Because of a medication error either by the nursing staff, or by the doctor, Jim received a huge overdose of medications. He was taken to an area hospital where he remained for almost a week and then was discharged to a different nursing home. When I spoke with Jim today, he told me that the doctor informed him that he would probably be discharged from the nursing home either Friday or Saturday. He. Will. Finally. Be. Coming. Home. How we rejoice as we thank the Lord for his unfailing love and care.
Once again, Jim will join the fray, as he posts his thoughts regarding the incredible nation that we are so blessed to live in and on the great American political process.
Finally, I want to extend my gratitude for all of the love and support we’ve received from the readers of these pages. God always seemed to direct the right person to these pages when we most needed them.

As some may know, Jim was transferred to a nursing facility on Friday for physical rehab. He was found unconscious and not breathing at about 8:30 this morning. He was taken to the hospital where it was determined that there was either a medication error on the part of the nursing staff or that the physician had over-prescribed some of his pain medication. To complicate matters, it appears that he may have aspirated some fluids while unconscious and may be developing pneumonia once again. He is currently in ICU at a local hospital here in the Denver area.
Please pray for Jim’s healing and that we, as a family, would be sustained by the Lord’s love through all of this.

Hmmm…well it’s 3:30 AM and I’ve got the wide-eye…can’t sleep. Just a short update on Jim….Late last month, Jim was transferred from ICU to a long term acute care hospital. After spending several days there, being weaned from the respirator, he was finally transferred to a nursing home for some long term physical rehab.
We rejoice in the fact that the Lord has worked in a mighty way in Jim’s life. The very difficult, dangerous, surgery that had been anticipated, will not be necessary. What tremendous news!
Our family is truly grateful for your prayers and support and would ask you to continue to lift Jim before the Lord.
Guy ( Jim’s Dad)
